Rachin Ravindra: New Zealand’s Fastest Growing Cricket Player

Rachin Ravindra was born in New Zealand on the 18th of November in 1999. Rachin is the son of migrants from India and their unique naming style combines the first names of two cricket legends, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, which showcases how deeply his father loves the sport. His childhood dreaming about playing cricket internationally for New Zealand, coupled with his passion for the sport makes him one of the most successful cricketers of the country.

Cricket, as a hobby, developed into a passion during school years for Rachin. His father’s cricket club activities inspired him to practice the sport from an early age. He even started practicing with his parents. He had started looking up to NZ’s spin bowler, Daniel Vettori and began to attempt mimicking his playing style. With a lot of effort, Rachin was able to attend Wellington College where he already had a reputation and started playing at the college level.

Rachin Ravindra started his career off strong, making his debut for the Wellington Firebirds in the 2018-19 season. His aggressive batting and left-handed spin bowling made him stand out in domestic cricket. He played for New Zealand’s under 19 team in 2016 and 2018, and was named one of the most talented players in the 2018 ICC tournament. Rachin showcased his skill further when he played for New Zealand A against Pakistan A in a first class match in November, 2018.

Rachin Ravindra began his international career in 2021 by playing his first Twenty20 International against Bangladesh on September 1, and then went on to play his first test against India on November 25. Ravindra showed exceptional determination when he secured a draw for New Zealand in the Kanpur test with the help of his strong batting against the Indian spin attack. This moment proved his ability to perform well under pressure.

Rachin Ravindra experienced what was a career best in 2023. He had been selected to represent New Zealand at the ICC Cricket World Cup. However, initially he was rostered on the team as a substitute for an injured Michael Bracewell. In the tournament, he drove a brilliant performance scoring a total of 578 runs off 10 matches with an extraordinary average of 106.45, marking three centuries and two fifties.

Batting at number three, Rachin’s first One Day International century came from England where he played magnificently, scoring 123 runs with no outs against him in 96 balls. This made him the youngest New Zealand player to score a World Cup century. The 23 year old went on to set new records by scoring against Australia and Pakistan.

Further, he became the first New Zealand batter to score three centuries in a single World Cup. In January 2024, he received the award for ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year for his remarkable results.

Rachin Ravindra has had achievements in international competitions. In December 2023, he joined the Chennai Super Kings for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. He made an impressive debut and scored 222 runs in 10 overs with a notable strike rate which included a brisk 37 runs off 15 balls in his first game. His athleticism and mental fortitude have proven to be great strengths in all formats of the game.

Rachin Ravindra became the owner of the remarkable record of the highest maiden Test century by a New Zealand player with 240 runs after scoring his first Test century in a match against South Africa in February 2024.
